QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's alum Rob Delaney has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Tampa Bay Rays after opening up the season with the Triple-A Durham Bulls. The Major League call up is the second for the reliever, who made his Major League debut with the Minnesota Twins on Sept. 4, 2010.
The Rays used Delaney immediately as the reliever tossed 1.0 scoreless inning in a 5-3 win against the Orioles on May 9. The righty was the first reliever out of the bullpen and had one strikeout in a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Delaney retired Mark Reynolds, Cesar Izturis and Brian Roberts.
The reliever earned the call up to the Rays after going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 appearances for the Bulls. The righty also had 19 strikeouts in 18.0 innings of work and held the opposition to a .206 batting average.
The 2008 MLB.com Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year and the 2007 MLB.com Class-A Relief Pitcher of the Year, Delaney first signed with the Minnesota Twins as a free agent in 2006.
