QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball's junior guard Shenneika Smith earned a spot on the BIG EAST weekly honor roll on Monday after a 1-1 week. The week was highlighted by a road victory at Syracuse, where Smith scored a team-best 17 points.
The honor is Smith's second of the season and seventh of her career as she was named to the honor roll three times in 2010-11 and was the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week three times in 2009-10. She was also named to the honor roll on Jan. 9.
Classmate Eugeneia McPherson also earned BIG EAST Honor Roll mentions in back-to-back weeks this season.
Smith, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native, averaged a team-best 15.0 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game. At Syracuse on Jan. 11, the guard had eight rebounds shooting 50 percent from the field (6-for-12). Against Marquette on Sunday, Smith led the Red Storm with 13 points to go along with six rebounds.
Smith shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line and 44.4 percent from the field. She continued to move up in St. John's record books, surpassing Dottie Giordano (1974-1978) for the No. 15 spot with 1,044 career points. Smith was also honored with a pregame ball presentation during Sunday's game against Marquette for becoming a member of the 1,000-point club.
Smith ranks No. 23 in the BIG EAST in scoring and No. 12 in overall rebounding. The junior is No. 7 in the conference in defensive rebounds with 5.2 per game. She is also 10th in blocked shots (1.2/game).
The Red Storm will be back in action on Tuesday, in a quick turnaround game against No. 7 Rutgers. Tuesday's tip off is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena and will be aired live nationally on CBS Sports Network.
