QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's soccer team had a pair of players selected in the MLS Supplemental Draft as Pablo Punyed was picked by Sporting Kansas City in the second round (35th overall) and Walter Hines was drafted by FC Dallas in the third round (49th overall). The duo joins Connor Lade, who signed a home grown contract with the New York Red Bulls in December, as the latest examples of the St. John's pipeline to the MLS. Including this year's pair of selections, the Red Storm has had 14 all-time MLS draft picks.
"We are really happy for Pablo and Walter," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "This is a testament to the hard work and dedication they exhibited both at St. John's and throughout their careers. We are excited to track their progress as they enter the next phase of their careers."
The BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year and a first team All-BIG EAST honoree this past season, Punyed scored four goals, two game-winners, and added career-highs in both assists (3) and points (11). The midfielder finished his Red Storm career with 10 goals and six assists in 84 games, including 62 starts. A team captain as a senior, Punyed also tallied four-career game-winning goals.
A third team All-BIG EAST selection as a senior, Hines set new-career highs in both goals (6) and points (13) this past season and was one of five players to start all 23 games. The forward increased his goal output in each of his four seasons with the Red Storm and finished his career with 12 goals and 10 assists in 82 games, including 53 starts. The Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the 2009 BIG EAST Tournament, Hines also tallied five-career game-winners.
The duo helped St. John's post a 52-19-16 (.690) record in four seasons, reach three NCAA Tournaments, win two BIG EAST Tournament crowns and one BIG EAST regular season title.
