- TEAM NOTES
The win over Rutgers is St. John's second of the season over a ranked opponent. The Red Storm knocked off then-No. 14/12 Louisville 72-64 on Jan. 8, 2012. St. John's is 2-0 in games against ranked opponents at Carnesecca Arena this season. - The last time St. John's defeated a top-10 opponent was then-No. 9 Notre Dame on March 3, 2008 at Carnesecca Arena.
- St. John's has now won 10 consecutive games at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm made a season-high 26 free throws (26-of-32). The new mark eclipsed the 20 free throws made against Hartford in a 70-45 win on Dec. 4, 2011. After falling behind early, the Red Storm used a 9-0 run in the first half to pull even at 15. - St. John's forced 21 turnovers and outscored Rutgers 20-8 in points off turnovers. It was the third consecutive BIG EAST game that St. John's forced at least 20 turnovers.
- Rutgers had only 13 assists to their 21 turnovers. St. John's has not allowed any BIG EAST opponent to record a positive assist-to-turnover ratio so far this season.
- The Red Storm is now 11-1 when outscoring their opponent in points off turnovers.
The St. John's defense held Rutgers forward April Sykes to just six points for the game. Sykes had been averaging 14.5 points per game and ranked 11th in the BIG EAST.
Last year St. John's held Sykes scoreless on 0-of-10 shooting in their 51-48 win over Rutgers on Feb. 1, 2011.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
- Junior Eugeneia McPherson finished with 17 points, which marks the 14th-consecutive game she reached double figures.
- McPherson also made a season-high 11 free throws (11-of-13); the most by a Red Storm player in a game this season.
- Junior Shenneika Smith added 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Smith was 4-of-9 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line.
- Junior Nadirah McKenith recorded her ninth double-digit scoring effort of the season with 15 points on the night.
- McKenith added three steals on the night giving her 183 for her Red Storm career.
She moves up to to eighth on the St. John's all-time list as she passed Marcia Price (1992-95) and Debbie Brajevich (1978-81) who were tied for eight with 182. - Sophomore Mary Nwachukwu returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench the previous five games.
