QUEENS, N.Y. -- St. John's senior catcher Kacee Cox was selected as one of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award on Wednesday, as announced by the organization.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Cox, a 2010 All-BIG EAST second team selection, is back in the Red Storm lineup after missing the 2011 season with a wrist injury. She led the conference with a .404 batting average in 2010 en route to NFCA All-Great Lakes Region second team honors and is expected to challenge many St. John's career offensive records during her senior year.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Sport Management in May 2011 with a 3.30 GPA, Cox is now pursuing a master's degree in Sport Management, achieving a 3.56 GPA in her first semester in the program.
Cox has been a leader in the community, working with the Relay for Life, the Ronald McDonald House, the St. Nick Men's Shelter, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and retirement and nursing facilities. One of the biggest community service efforts of Cox and the softball team is their participation in the Friends of Jaclyn program, where the team adopts a child with a malignant brain tumor, giving the child the opportunity to see Division I softball up close and feel like they are part of the team.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I head coaches and fans who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Cox and the Red Storm are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 18, as they take on the Retrievers of UMBC at 11 a.m. as part of the Longwood Lancer Lead Off.
