QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2012)-- The St. John's softball team continues its 2012 campaign on Saturday, with three games at the Lancer Lead Off Classic, hosted by the University of Longwood in Longwood, Va. The Red Storm will match up with three teams on Saturday Feb. 18, including local BIG EAST rival Seton Hall, UMBC and host Longwood.
"We're excited to hit the dirt again," head coach Amy Kvilhaug said. "After a positive showing last weekend and some competitively close ball games, we are ready to get back to work and get some wins. This is the time of year when we are really looking to work out the kinks and improve weekend to weekend."
The Red Storm will play the Pirates a 9:15 a.m., then match up with the Lancers at 1:45 p.m. and conclude the tournament against the Terriers at 6:15 p.m. Live Stats will be available for all three games on RedStormSports.com.
- This will be the second-ever trip for the Red Storm to the tournament hosted by the Longwood University Lancers. St. John's last played in the Lancer Lead Off Classic in 2010, posting a 3-1 mark, beating Bucknell, Quinnipiac and host Longwood during the tournament.
- The third game of the tournament will mark the 62nd meeting between the Pirates of Seton Hall and the Red Storm. Even though the BIG EAST rivals have a storied conference tradition, Sunday's meeting will not count as a BIG EAST game because it was not scheduled by the conference.
- St. John's was originally scheduled to play four games during the Lancer Lead Off, but inclement weather forecasted for Sunday has forced the tournament into a condensed schedule. St. John's will now play three games on Saturday, Feb. 18 beginning a 9:15 against Seton Hall. This will be the first time since 2003 that the Red Storm will play three games in one day.
- During its opening tournament, the Red Storm played three one-run games, including a near-upset of then-No. 10 Georgia, which STJ lost 2-1 in eight innings. In 2011, St. John's was in 13 one-run games, compiling an 8-5 records in such contests.
- Senior Kristi Cady led the Red Storm offensively, batting .533 over the course of the Red & Black Showcase, racking up three doubles and two triples, while scoring five runs. In addition, Kady posted seven putouts from her centerfield position and had a 1.000 slugging percentage. For her exploits, Cady was named to the first BIG EAST Honor Roll of 2012.
- Weather played a factor in Georgia as temperatures reached below freezing during some of the night contests. With below-20 temperatures forecasted for the morning of Feb. 12, the Red Storm's game against in-state rival Army was cancelled.
- During the first weekend of play, St. John's made a habit of getting off to a fast start, outscoring opponents 9-2 in the first inning during the four-game tournament.
- For both UMBC and Seton Hall, this weekend's action will mark the start of their 2012 campaigns, while both St. John's and Longwood began their seasons last weekend in Georgia. The Lancers visited Atlanta, taking home the Georgia State Classic title, while St. John's went to the University of Georgia's Red & Black Showcase.
