QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball enters the Associated Press Top 25 at No. 20 on Monday after defeating then-No. 2 Connecticut with a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of play.
St. John's was a preseason pick in the AP's top 25 as No. 25 but hasn't been ranked during the regular season since Jan. 3, 2011 when the Red Storm was No. 18.
It is the 27th appearance in the Associated Press poll for the Red Storm, including preseason and final poll rankings.
The Red Storm began receiving votes four weeks ago after St. John's upset then-No. 7/8 Rutgers at Carnesecca Arena (Jan. 17) and continued receiving votes after defeating Rutgers again on its home court, 61-52 (Feb. 12). By upsetting then-No. 2 Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. St. John's became the first unranked team to do so since 1993, ending the Huskies 99-game home winning streak at Gampel Pavilion, St. Johns surged in the top 25.
Baylor remains No. 1 in the Top 20, while the next three have changed slightly. Stanford shifts to the No. 2 spot, followed by No. 3 Notre Dame and Connecticut. Miami, Maryland, Duke, Ohio State, Delaware and Tennessee round out the top 10.
Ahead of St. John's sits Penn State, Green Bay, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Georgetown, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Georgia and St. Bonaventure.
DePaul, Purdue, Nebraska, Rutgers and Gonzaga finish off the poll.
Head coach Kim Barnes Arico, who recently became St. John's all-time winningest coach, has received the most national attention of any of her St. John's predecessors. With Barnes Arico at the helm of the Red Storm program, St. John's has been ranked 20 times, including preseason rankings.
