QUEENS, N.Y. -- A week after earning her first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod of 2012, St. John's junior infielder Chrissy Montez hit .500 with seven RBI and three home runs to earn her first career BIG EAST Player of the Week award.
The Santa Clara, Calif. native becomes the first Red Storm player to garner BIG EAST Player of the Week honors since Roxy Struble garnered the accolade on March 24, 2008, and the first to gain an individual weekly award since Linzee Sumrall was named the conference pitcher of the week on February 23, 2009.
Batting in the leadoff position during all five games, Montez reached base at least twice in every contest, scoring two runs in every game. She also finished the week hitting three home runs off a Syracuse pitching staff that had allowed opposing batters to hit just .171 prior to league action. Montez upped her season total to five homers, all of which have come in the last two weeks at Red Storm Field.
In the conference opening doubleheader against Providence, Montez went 1-for-4 with a double and two walks. She then lit it up against the two-time defending conference champion Orange, going 7-for-12 over the weekend with three home runs and two doubles to record all seven of her RBI.
In 20 plate appearances over the week, Montez posted a .600 on-base percentage and a 1.250 slugging percentage without a single strikeout.
Montez and the Red Storm (13-21) will continue their five-game home stand with a midweek doubleheader against local rival Farleigh-Dickinson, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4 at Red Storm Field.
