BARRINGTON, R.I. (April 9, 2012)-- The St. John's women's golf team, cushioned by a big lead entering the final round, shot a 325(+37) to claim the Brown Invitational title. Sophomore Harin Lee, who has been St. John's top performer in all of its tournaments in 2011-12, took home a second-place finish with a second-round 75 (+3).
"We really enjoy playing in this event," head coach Ambry Bishop said. "The course is one of the best we play all season. Today produced very tough scoring conditions with high winds and cold temperatures. We hed on and were able to pick up our third win of the season. Harin had another solid tournament and is continuing her strong play."
Junior Jennifer Neville shot an 81 (+9) to finish in a tie for ninth, her third top-10 finish this spring. Sophomore Stephanie Eybers posted another strong outing with a final-round 84(+12) to tie for 15th. Senior Ellen Oswald shot an 85 (+13) on Tuesday to finish 21st, while junior Mariana Barrios posted an 88(+16) to round out the scoring for the Johnnies.
The win is the third of the year for the Red Storm, who has also taken home titles at the Richmond Spider Invitational (Oct. 10-11) and the Spring Spider Invitational (Mar. 26-27).
This is the second time in the Bishop Era that the women's golf team has won at least three titles, the last being 2004-05. That year, the Red Storm took home five team titles, including the 2005 BIG EAST Championship as Bishop was named conference coach of the year in her first season at the helm.
St. John's will be looking to continue its strong play as it heads to local rival Columbia for the Roar-EE Invitational, April 13-14 in Suffern, N.Y. in its last tournament before the BIG EAST Championships at the end of the month.
