NORTH HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - St. John's Athletics held the third bi-annual Lou Carnesecca Golf Classic on Monday, June 4 at the North Hempstead Country Club, honoring legendary St. John's baseball coach Jack Kaiser and STJ Trustee Emeritus Richard Chapdelaine. The event hosted 285 dinner guests for the benefit of Red Storm Athletics.
"I want to thank everyone for coming, because today is such a wonderful event," Hall of Fame coach Lou Carnesecca said. "Most of all I want to thank Mr. Chapdelaine and Mr. Kaiser. Everyone here knows what all they accomplished. The most important thing is that they did it by being kind to other people, and that's the big thing to recognize today."
After a short rain delay, the golfers were able to enjoy good weather at the course, playing in a shotgun start that began at 12:20 p.m. Afterwards, Red Storm supporters got the chance to mingle with numerous celebrities that were in attendance, including: Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, Walter Berry, Tarik Turner, Frank Alagia, John Farmer, Ron Rutledge, Brian Mahoney, Terence Mullin, Bill Raftery, Tom "Satch" Sanders, Jayson Williams, Felipe Lopez, Gordon Thomas, Larry Johnson and Coach Carnesecca.
At the dinner, guests were treated to inspiring testimonies and stories from Carnesecca, Kaiser, Chapdelaine and honorary chairman Dom Camera. Current St. John's men's basketball coach Steve Lavin came out in support and shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming 2012-13 season, while newly minted women's basketball head coach Joe Tartamella joined St. John's supporters for the golfing.
"It's always a pleasure to be a part of something that honors Coach Carnesecca," Lavin said. "Anything that has his named attached to it is special. As an athletics program and as a basketball program, what makes St. John's so special is the people. Winning is one of the things that naturally sets us apart, but the winning never happens unless we've had great people that have paved the way for those that follow to benefit. Whether it's Frank McGuire, Joe Lapchick or Lou Carnesecca, from the same ilk and same fabric, it is what sets St. John's apart from other institutions."
Through the golf, silent and live auctions and the support of many local businesses, through sponsorships and the Lou Carnesecca Golf Classic's e-journal, more than $250,000 dollars were raised to benefit St. John's athletics.
