Towson, Md. - Picking up right where it left off on Sunday evening, the St. John's women's golf team grabbed a five-stroke win at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational to open the 2012 fall season, firing a 306 in the final round.
"I'm really proud of the way our team played this week, it was a great way to start out season," head coach Ambry Bishop said.
Junior Harin Lee tied for the individual lead after a 73(+1) in round two. The Bayside, N.Y. native took home second place based on a tiebreaker, which compared her hole-by-hole score with that of Old Dominion's Elizabeth Haycock starting with the 18th hole and going backwards. Because Lee bogeyed the 17th hole and Haycock finished her round with eight-straight pars, Haycock took the individual title.
Senior Jennifer Neville and junior Rachel Carpenter also garnered top-10 finishes as Neville - the round one leader - shot a 78(+6) to tie for fifth, while Carpenter shot a 76 (+4) to tie for eighth. One stroke outside of the top-10 was junior Stephanie Eybers, who posted a 79(+7) to finish 11th. Senior Sebin Kim fired her best round of the tournament with an 80(+8) to complete the scoring for the Red Storm.
Neville and Lee battled from the start for the tournament lead, as Lee came out with birdies on each of the first two holes. Playing in the group behind, Neville bogeyed the third hole to put both players at three-over on top of the leaderboard.
Both players bogeyed the fourth, with Lee adding a bogey on the fifth and Neville bogeying the seventh. At the midway point, both players found themselves at five-over, just one shot off the lead. Meanwhile, Carpenter was making a charge, posting a one-over 37 on the front, making the turn just three off the lead.
Neville went three-over on the back nine, but it wasn't enough as Lee played one-over for her final nine holes for the best round of the tournament by any player in the field. Carpenter and Eybers also posted strong finishing nines as Carpenter fired a 39(+3) and Eybers closed with a 38(+2).
Over the course of the day, the Johnnies saw their lead grow to as much as 10 strokes before a late-hole charge by defending champion Old Dominion came up short.
Up next for the Red Storm is the first-ever St. John's Women's Intercollegiate, hosted by STJ at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, N.Y. from Sept. 17-18.
