QUEENS, N.Y. - Following an 0-0-2 weekend at The University of Akron Tournament that extended St. John's season-opening unbeaten streak to eight games, Rafael Diaz has been named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week. The selection marks the third time Diaz has earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors in his career, including once in both the 2011 and 2010 seasons.
Diaz opened the weekend by posting his fourth shutout of the season with a four-save effort in a 0-0 draw against No. 9 Akron, a game that aired nationally on FOX Soccer. The keeper then added a season-high six saves in a 1-1 draw against Butler.
Both Diaz and Jack Bennett, who assisted on the equalizer against Butler, were also named to The University Of Akron Tournament All-Tournament Team, as announced last night.
The BIG EAST leader in save percentage (.886), Diaz also ranks second with a 0.46 goals against average and tied for second with four shutouts. Bennett, meanwhile, is tied for seventh in the league with nine points (3g, 3a). The defender is also tied for ninth in goals and tied for fourth in assists.
St. John's (5-0-3) returns to action at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22, opening BIG EAST play on the road against No. 4/4 Connecticut.
