QUEENS, N.Y. - After helping St. John's win the Gamecock Classic with a 2-0-0 mark, Jack Bennett has earned a spot on the BIG EAST weekly honor roll. Bennett is already the third St. John's player named to the honor roll in just the first two weeks of the season as both Rafael Diaz and Tim Parker were recognized following the opening week of action.
The Offensive MVP of the Gamecock Classic, Bennett registered one goal, a game-winner, and one assist as the Red Storm finished ahead of Northwestern (1-0-1), South Carolina (0-1-1) and Kentucky (0-2-0). Bennett was also joined by Diaz, Parker and Jamie Thomas on the Gamecock Classic All-Tournament Team.
After assisting on a goal in a 2-0 win against South Carolina, the senior converted a penalty kick for the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory against Kentucky.
St. John's (3-0-1), which is unbeaten in its first four games for the first time since 2008, currently leads the BIG EAST in goals against average (0.47) and ranks tied for second in goals per game (2.0). Bennett, Nick Matthews and Andres Vargas each have two goals and one assist on the season and are among seven players tied for fourth in the league in points (5).
St. John's returns to action on Sept. 5 with an 8 p.m. game against Princeton before concluding a brief two-game homestand on Sept. 8 with an 8 p.m. contest against William & Mary.
