QUEENS, N.Y. - On Tuesday, Oct. 8, St. John's University's Department of Student Development for Athletes held a Faculty Coach Reception in the Belson Suite at Belson Stadium. The reception was an opportunity for student-athletes to meet and interact with various faculty members outside of the classroom while taking in the sights and sounds of a Red Storm men's soccer game against visiting La Salle.
This year's reception featured opening remarks by Athletic Director Chris Monasch, while Director of Academic Support Services Eric Rienecker presented both the St. John's baseball and lacrosse teams with the 2012-13 BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award.
The teams were selected for the distinction based on the 2012-13 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on the institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference sponsored sport. Ty Blankmeyer, Alex Caruso and Zach Lauricella represented the St. John's baseball team who earned the honor for the third consecutive year. Joe Addona, Colin Keegan, Kieran McArdle and Drew Viscusi represented the men's lacrosse team who has now been recognized two years in a row.
The Faculty Coach events were reintroduced by the Department of Student Development for Athletes in the fall of 2005 as a way for the University's faculty to develop a better understanding of the student-athlete experience. Events include the Faculty Coach Reception each semester and the Faculty Coach for a Day Program.
"I have really enjoyed the Faculty Coach Program," said Associate Professor at St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences David Rosenthal. "As a former student-athlete, I understand how tough it can be to balance academics and playing on a team. Game day is exciting and getting to see the players display their talents and hard work on the field is always a great opportunity."
Through these events and other efforts, Student Development for Athletes hopes to continue to build relationships between the St. John's faculty and student-athletes.
