QUEENS, N.Y. - Despite 10 lead changes and 22 tie scores, St. John's (14-10, 3-5 BIG EAST) was unable to defeat Xavier (13-8, 5-2 BIG EAST) as the Musketeers swept the Red Storm 3-0 (24-26, 18-25, 21-25) on Friday night.
St. John's was able to keep things close in the first set with five kills by Aleksandra Wachowicz, forcing five lead changes and 14 tie scores before the Musketeers were able to pull away with two consecutive kills by Makayla Agin to take the 26-24 victory.
After St. John's opened the second set with an 8-6 lead, the Musketeers began to attack on a 5-0 run to take back the lead up 11-8. With momentum building, Ashley Boursiquot took a pass from Deniz Mutlugil and spiked it home to snap the Xavier streak and send things back in the Red Storm's favor.
Both teams continued to battled back and forth through 22 tie scores and 10 lead changes in the second set until Xavier snapped an 18-18 tie with seven unanswered points to take the second set 25-18.
After falling down 10-4 early in the final set, St. John's began to rally back out of a timeout with a kill by Karin Palgutova to start an 8-3 rally to bring the set to within a point. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Red Storm could bring it as it fell 25-21 to end the match.
Palgutova led St. John's with the only double-double for the Red Storm, finishing the match with 10 kills and 11 digs while posting up three blocks, two assists, and an ace. Wachowicz finished just behind Palgutova with nine kills and six digs while Boursiquot added six kills and five blocks of her own.
Along with the five blocks by Boursiquot, Briana Guzman and Palgutova each made their presence known at the net on defense as they combined for seven blocks on the day.
