QUEENS, N.Y. - Sophomore Yaidy Santiago was named BIG EAST Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. In a 3-2 road win over Creighton on Nov. 1, Santiago recorded career-highs in kills (15) and digs (12) and also collected her first-career double-double. Creighton entered the match with a No. 7 RPI ranking in the NCAA.
Santiago helped the Red Storm jump out to a 2-0 match lead over the Bluejays with six kills on 10 attempts and no errors (.600 hitting percentage) in a 25-22 second set victory. The six kills were the most by any player in the set.
The native of Guayama, Puerto Rico, also collected a clutch kill late in the fifth set when Creighton held match point. The kill narrowed Creighton's lead to 14-13 and the Red Storm outscored the Bluejays, 4-1, the rest of the way to win the final game.
Head coach Joanne Persico named Santiago "MVP of the match."
This is Santiago's first-career BIG EAST Player of the Week honor. She becomes the second member of the Red Storm to earn the award this season (the first being sophomore Karin Palgutova on Sept. 16). St. John's has not had two or more players earn BIG EAST Player of the Week in the same season since 2008 - the year the team won its third-consecutive conference regular season championship.
