QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's softball head coach Amy Kvilhaug unveiled the schedule for the 2014 season as the Red Storm looks to compete in a tough 54-game schedule including six teams from the 2013 NCAA Tournament as well as an exhibition game against the Dutch National Softball Team.
"Scheduling for our season is such an interesting part of the job," stated Kvilhaug. "There are so many factors taken into account to keep it both well balanced and challenging, while molding it to your philosophy."
The challenges start at the beginning of the 2014 season as the Red Storm will open at the FAU Kickoff Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., where it will take on five teams including a nationally ranked Louisville team and 2013 NCAA Tournament squad Tulsa, between Feb. 7-9.
"We know that FAU has a history of running quality tournaments with quality opponents so right out of the gate we will challenge our team with top ranked, NCAA Tournament caliber programs," added Kvilhaug.
From there, the Red Storm will head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Arkansas Invitational Tournament (Feb. 14-15) where it will have open and close the weekend against 2013 NCAA Tournament teams. After opening against NC State, the Red Storm will then take on UMKC and Jackson State before ending the weekend against host-Arkansas.
With four games against NCAA Tournament teams in the books, the Red Storm will then head to Athens, Ga., for one of the most competitive tournaments of the season at the sixth-annual Bulldog Invitational (Feb. 28 - March 2) hosted by the University of Georgia. There, St. John's will take on yet another pair of nationally ranked opponents as they open the weekend against UAB, champion of the 2013 NCAA Louisville Region, before playing back-to-back games against Georgia.
On March 5, St. John's will return to Clearwater, Fla., for spring break as it opens with a game against the three-time (2009, 2011, 2013) European Champion Dutch National Softball Team before competing in the three-day USF-Under Armour Invitational (March 7-9).
"We are going to have some really good matchups at the USF-Under Armour Invitational against teams who come from climates similar to ours," said Kvilhaug. "It will even out the playing field and make for great competition."
There, the Red Storm will play against six different teams in a span of three days: Boston College (March 7), Toledo (March 7), Indiana State (March 8), Kansas (March 8), Cleveland State (March 9) and Quinnipiac (March 9).
Starting to work its way back to New York, the Red Storm will round out the tournament half of the schedule at the Delaware Spring Invitational Tournament (March 14-16) against Robert Morris, Cornell and host-Delaware.
After 25-consecutive games on the road, the Red Storm will return home to Queens and host Manhattan in a home-opening doubleheader on March 19.
With the additions of the three new teams to the conference, St. John's will open BIG EAST play on the road in 2014 as it heads to Chicago, Ill., to take on DePaul in a three-game set on March 22-23.
Following a midweek, non-conference game on the road against Iona (March 25), the Red Storm will return home to host Butler (March 29-30) and Fairleigh Dickinson (April 2) before heading out on a seven-game road trip.
Starting with a three-game series against Georgetown (April 5-6), the Red Storm will return to New York for a midweek game on the road against LIU-Brooklyn (April 10) before rounding out the trip with a three-game set at Providence (April 12-13).
Heading into Easter break, the Red Storm will return home for a non-conference matchup at home against Binghamton on April 15 before hosting local rival Seton Hall (April 17-19) in a three-game matchup.
Following a trip to New Jersey to take on former BIG EAST member Rutgers on April 23, the Red Storm will return to Queens one last time for the final home series of the regular season as it hosts Creighton on April 26-27.
With one final non-conference game against local foe Hofstra (April 30), the Red Storm will round out the 2014 regular season with a three-game series on the road against Villanova on May 3-4 in Villanova, Pa.
The 2014 BIG EAST Championship (May 8-10) will be hosted at The Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill., by DePaul.
"We are really excited about the new-look BIG EAST and feel it will be more exciting than ever as league titles and NCAA berths could be given to any team on any given year due to the parity the league now provides," concluded Kvilhaug.
Admission to all home games for the 2014 Red Storm softball season is free to fans of all ages. For more information on Red Storm Field, click here.
