QUEENS, N.Y. (July 30, 2013) - St. John's cross country alumna Lori Dougherty has been recognized by her alma mater for receiving the prestigious Fulbright Student Grant to conduct research and teach overseas.
Dougherty graduated in 2011 from The School of Education with a degree in education and social studies and is one of 10 St. John's University students to receive the honor, the largest number of Fulbrights awarded to the University in a single year. The University also had its most-ever finalists with 20.
The Fulbright program is the largest international exchange program of its kind, with grants given to students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential.
"This is one of the most prestigious forms of recognition that a student can receive for scholarship and leadership," said Robert A. Mangione, Ed.D., R.Ph., Provost of St. John's. "These outstanding scholars will be wonderful ambassadors for St. John's - and for our nation - as they engage in their studies throughout the world. Their success is a testament to their hard work, the great support provided by their faculty mentors and the high quality of the education that they receive at our University."
As part of her Fulbright Student Grant, Dougherty will explore the Czech Republic and compare its educational system to that of the United States.
"In 2009 I went on a service trip to Paris," said Dougherty. "While there, we volunteered in soup kitchens, explored the city and spent time with high school students. I was fascinated and enjoyed comparing the French and American school systems. I applied for a Fulbright grant so I could continue comparing other countries' educational systems to ours. I will work with students, teachers, parents and administrators to develop a complete picture of the Czech education system for a comparison study between their system and that of the United States."
Dougherty was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team in 2008, and was a member of many extracurricular activities on the St. John's campus, including Jumpstarts Corps, After School All-Stars, the Education Society, the Education Board, Meals on Wheels, L.E.A.D for Athletes and the Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Eta Sigma honors societies. Dougherty was named to the Dean's List numerous times in her undergraduate career at St. John's and served as the vice president of the Program Planning Board.
"We are very proud of Lori for her Fulbright honor," said St. John's cross country coach Jim Hurt. "She is a dedicated and passionate person in all that she does and we congratulate her on this prestigious honor."
As a devoted member of the Red Storm's cross country team, Dougherty was equally as successful. The Bellport, N.Y. native was a regular scorer for St. John's, graduating with lifetime bests of 15:39, 20:33 and 22:02 for 4K, 5K and 6K, respectively.
