QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's second season under head coach Joe Tartamella is set to begin Nov. 8 and features an 11-game non-conference schedule that includes seven games against fellow postseason teams from 2012-13, three against NCAA Tournament squads, six home games and a third-straight invite to the annual Maggie Dixon Classic held at Madison Square Garden.
The non-conference schedule features four first-time opponents and a conference breakdown that includes three games against the SEC, two games against the MAAC, CAA and NEC and one against the Ivy League.
"With the excitement surrounding the newly-built BIG EAST, our team will be tested early with a challenging non-conference schedule," remarked Tartamella. "We will travel to play Florida and Auburn and host a number of tough opponents. We will also have the opportunity to play at Madison Square Garden in the Maggie Dixon Classic against Gary Blair's Texas A&M squad. Our fans and our alumni base will be excited about the competitive schedule we have put together to get us ready for the rigors of the BIG EAST."
In 2012-13, Tartamella became the first head coach in St. John's 39-year history to take the Red Storm to the NCAA Tournament in his first season at the helm. In 2013-14, the Red Storm returns eight letterwinners and adds four newcomers, including two transfers, to the court and will look to remain as one of the top teams in the country.
The Red Storm will open on the road with first-time opponent Sacred Heart on Friday, Nov. 8. The Pioneers are under the direction of first-time head coach Jessica Mannetti. St. John's and Sacred Heart will tip off at 7 p.m. at the William H. Pitt Center. Last year, the Pioneers went to the postseason Women's NIT for the first time in 14 years.
St. John's will be home for the next three games, hosting local teams, Iona, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Quinnipiac. The Gaels, who the Red Storm defeated 71-55 in 2012, are also under the direction of a new head coach. Tartamella and his squad will face Billi Godsey and the Gaels at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in the Red Storm's home-opener. St. John's leads against the Gaels the all-time series 12-3.
Four days later, St. John's will play host to St. Francis (N.Y.) in a battle of the boroughs. The Red Storm and Terriers play a Saturday afternoon matinee on Nov. 16, tipping off at 2 p.m. St. John's and St. Francis have not played each other since Nov. 27, 2001. The Red Storm is unbeaten in the series with a 7-0 record.
St. John's will finish its three-game home stand with a midweek, 7 p.m. tip on Wednesday, Nov. 20 against Quinnipiac, the return of a home-and-home series which began last year. It is just the second-ever game between the New York and Connecticut foes. Quinnipiac won the NEC title last season, making the trip to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 13 seed.
The Red Storm will then take to the road in a pre-Thanksgiving matchup against the first of two SEC opponents, facing the Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla., on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The Gators are another postseason team from 2013, advancing to the WNIT Semifinals in Philadelphia. St. John's defeated Florida in their first and only meeting in November 2009.
Back at Carnesecca after the holiday, St. John's will host the Harvard Crimson on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.
Five days later, the Red Storm will travel to Auburn, Ala., for a first-time match up against the Tigers. Auburn and St. John's will tip off at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 at Auburn Arena. Auburn advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Women's NIT in 2012-13.
In mid-December, St. John's will host its sixth-annual Chartwells Holiday Classic, featuring Drexel, James Madison and Prairie View A&M. The Red Storm will play the Dragons, the 2013 Women's NIT Champions, in the first game at noon on Saturday, Dec. 14. Prairie View A&M, who competed in the 2011 St. John's Chartwells Holiday Classic, will play James Madison in the second game of the doubleheader. On Sunday, Dec. 15, winners of Saturday's doubleheader will play in the 2:30 p.m. championship game. The consolation round will precede the championship at Noon.
On Sunday, Dec. 22, St. John's will play in its third-straight Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden with this year's tip off against Texas A&M, the reigning SEC Champions. The Aggies and Red Storm will tip off at 11 a.m., the opening game a doubleheader that also features NCAA Champion Connecticut against Cal, another NCAA Tournament Final Four team. All four teams in this year's Maggie Dixon Classic were selected to the NCAA Tournament.
St. John's will finish up non-conference play with a trip to Delaware, competing the home-and-home series from last season. The Red Storm and Blue Hens will tip off at 5 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del., on Monday, Dec. 30.
In addition to the non-conference schedule, St. John's will play home-and-home series against each of the nine other BIG EAST teams, Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova and Xavier.
