WASHINGTON, D.C. - The St. John's defense surrendered just three shots on goal, but No. 13/13 Georgetown was able to capitalize on a chance in the 41st minute as the Hoyas defeated the Red Storm, 1-0. Jordan Stagmiller made two saves for St. John's (4-9-4, 1-6-1), which held the Hoyas below season averages in both shots and shots on goal. Bakie Goodman scored the game-winner for Georgetown (10-3-4, 5-2-1), while Tomas Gomez made two saves for the shutout.
"I thought we were doing well to limit them offensively in the first half, so it was very disappointing to give up a goal right before halftime," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "We did a better job of moving forward in the second half. We were able to create more chances and still limit their opportunities, but we just weren't able to finish."
Georgetown had the first shot of the game in the 2nd minute as an effort from Goodman was blocked by the defense.
St. John's followed with its first attempt in the 8th minute, but a Marco Bordon attempt was blocked.
A corner kick created the next Red Storm scoring chance, but Simon Tchoukriel pushed a header wide of the post in the 12th minute.
Both teams were held without another shot until the 23rd minute when Keegan Rosenberry worked through the offensive third before missing well wide on a shot from distance for the Hoyas.
Georgetown had a good look after a quick counter in the 38th minute, but Arun Basuljevic missed wide of the right post with a header.
After both teams were held without a shot on goal through the first 40 minutes, Georgetown took advantage of its first on-target chance in the 41st minute. Josh Turnley started the play with a pass into the left corner for Jared Rist, who sent a cross into the box. Goodman received the ball in the middle of the 18-yard box and tucked a shot inside the right post.
St. John's worked quickly to create a chance for an equalizer, but Jordan Rouse had a shot saved by Gomez in the 44th minute and Georgetown took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Georgetown had an early chance after the break as Alex Muyl had a shot saved by Stagmiller in the 47th minute.
A Hoya foul set up the next Red Storm chance in the 53rd minute. The ensuing free kick into the box was knocked down before Gabriel Camara had his shot blocked.
St. John's worked the ball up the right side of the field in the 60th minute before Daniel Herrera took a pass and unleashed a strike from distance that missed high.
The Red Storm used another free kick to create a dangerous chance in the box in the 66th minute, but Tchoukriel had a shot blocked.
After Rosenberry missed wide for Georgetown in the 68th minute, Brandon Allen had a shot stopped by Stagmiller in the 69th minute.
With St. John's still looking for the equalizer, Luis Esteves missed high in the 82nd minute of action. The Red Storm had one final look to level the score, but Herrera had a shot saved and the Hoyas held on for the 1-0 win.
St. John's concludes regular season action on Nov. 6 at home with a Senior Night matchup against Seton Hall. The 7:30 p.m. game will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
