Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement:
"We are happy to get the win today and be able to protect our home court. This is the start of a three-game stretch in five days, so we were happy to put a couple of runs together to open up the game in the second half. Our free throw shooting was a lot better today, which is a big plus for us, and getting 25 offensive rebounds was important. We're happy to get the win today and move on to Wagner on Sunday."
On the Red Storm tallying 25 offensive rebounds and 21 second chance points:
"We always feel that we can do a great job creating second chance opportunities. It's something that we focus on every day in practice, and obviously we hope as coaches that the things we emphasize in practice carry over to the game. It's good to see that it's paying off. It gives us extra opportunities if our shots aren't falling, but we also have to work on putting the ball back in the hoop."
On the play of sophomore forward Jade Walker:
"I've been very happy with her as far as the way she has been trying to prepare herself coming off the offseason. [Jade] getting her first double-double is great but she registered the most minutes she's ever played with 33. That's a massive step in the right direction. Seeing her go 2-for-2 from the line is also important. I expect great things from her and she's a kid that we feel will be a stalwart of the program over the time that she is here."
On playing three games in five days:
"We try to make sure we are careful and we prepare our team as best we can. Going to Europe this year has made it a little bit of a different experience for all of us. We make sure that they are in good shape and they will continue to get in better shape as the year goes on. That's the best part of getting into December. As we move into the month, classes are over and we have a better opportunity to spend more time with them and develop them not only as a team but as individuals."
On the team's halftime improvements:
"Our focus was the same from the start of the game. We talked about playing with energy, defending. I was disappointed with our defense throughout the entire game. We gave up too many opportunities to players to go to their strengths. That's something that we pride ourselves on and today we didn't do it. Holding them 51 points was good, but I didn't think our defensive intensity was where it had to be, which affected our offense."
Sophomore forward Jade Walker
On her offseason improvements:
"I definitely worked on my conditioning. I wanted to get in the best shape possible so that I can stay on the court longer. I also worked on my jump shot and defending, specifically staying low that I can stay out of foul trouble."
On her new role as a starter:
"I feel good. I'm trying to work on my game so that I can help the team out and do the best that I can for my teammates. Today I was mainly trying to focus on boxing out and making sure I had the best position possible to get rebounds."
Senior forward Amber Thompson
On her rebounding success:
"I know that in order to win the game you need to rebound. You can't score without the ball, so rebounding is my main focus right now."
