St. John's Sweeps BIG EAST Softball Weekly Awards

NEW YORK - For the first time this season, St. John's softball (8-12) has swept the BIG EAST weekly awards as freshman Kaitlin Fitzgerald was named BIG EAST Player of the Week and sophomore Tori Free took home the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors.
Fitzgerald earned her first collegiate honors after a 9-for-17 (.529) performance at the USF-Under Armour Showcase, driving in four runs while working a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly to lead the Red Storm to a 3-3 weekend. The freshman clean-up hitter went 4-for-6 in a pair of games on Saturday that included a 2-for-3 performance against a tough Kansas team.
Free earned her first collegiate Pitcher of the Week nod on Monday after being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on March 3 for the second time in her two-year career. The Red Storm's ace finished the USF-Under Armour Showcase with a 2-1 record in four games started, pitching a pair of complete games including a two-hit shutout against Indiana State on Saturday. The sophomore picked up 18 strikeouts in 20.0 innings of work this weekend while holding opponents to a .138 batting average
The Red Storm will return to action this weekend as it heads to Newark, Del., for its fifth-straight tournament at the Delaware Spring Invitational on March 14-16.
