St. John's Sweeps New Mexico at Hawaiian Airlines Classic

HONOLULU - St. John's bounced back from its first loss of the season to sweep New Mexico, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) on Friday night in their second match of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Red Storm was led by junior Karin Palgutova, who posted a season-high 19 kills with a .457 hitting percentage.
With the victory, the Red Storm improves to 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in the tournament, while the Lobos fall to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 at the event.
St. John's registered its fourth sweep of the 2014 campaign while finishing the match with a .356 hitting percentage - the second-highest of the season. Sophomore Briana Guzman led the squad with a career-high 10 kills, three blocks and an impressive .643 attacking percentage. Senior captain Aleksandra Wachowicz was the third St. John's player to post double-digits in kills as she finished the match with 11 to go along with six digs and two service aces.
Junior Deniz Mutlugil finished the match with a match-high in both assists (37) and blocks (5), while senior Ashley Boursiquot recorded three kills and three blocks. Junior libero Shawna-Lei Santos also added nine digs and three assists.
Palgutova was instrumental in putting the Lobos away in the first set as she recorded five kills with a .300 hitting percentage. The Red Storm would expand its lead to five (20-15) late in the set after kills by Boursiquot and Wachowicz, which led to New Mexico calling a timeout. The Lobos would get within three but a service error, followed by a kill from Palgutova would give the Red Storm the set 25-22.
The Red Storm never trailed in the second set and easily took control of the match winning 25-18. Palgutova was very active and accurate as she posted eight kills with a .455 hitting percentage. Mutlugil dished out 13 assists while Wachowicz registered four kills and two digs.
The third and decisive set saw 12 lead changes, but the Red Storm used a late 3-0 run to establish a 22-20 lead against the Lobos and never looked back as it concluded the match with a 25-23 win in the final frame.
Friday's contest marked the second time that these two schools have met on the court. The series is now tied at 1-1 after the Red Storm's victory. The first meeting was Sept. 12, 2008 in Albuquerque, N.M., where St. John's lost in straight sets.
