QUEENS, N.Y. – Before the start of the 2015 season, Red Storm Sports had the opportunity to sit down with senior pitcher Francesca Carrullo to take a deeper look into her four-year career with the Red Storm.
Carrullo enters the 2015 season after an impressive junior campaign that earned her a 7-2 record with a 4.28 ERA in 22 appearances and nine starts. Throughout her career, Carrullo has made 68 appearances and 28 starts, striking out 110 batters in 215.0 innings of work. Last season, the right-hander earned her first career BIG EAST weekly honors on April 7 after posting a 1.40 ERA through 10.0 innings of work while handing Georgetown (7-0 at the time) its first conference loss of the season.
Catching Up With Francesca Carrullo
Q: What has been your favorite part of being a member of the St. John’s softball team for the past four years?
A: Being able to be a part of a team that always has your back. Coming into St. John’s as a freshman, I was timid and scared with being away from home, but knowing you have a team of 20 other girls lets you know that you have the sense of family regardless of how far you are away from home.
Q: What has been your most memorable moment on the softball diamond during your time at St. John’s?
A: Striking out the final batter to beat Creighton, 2-0, and clinching a BIG EAST playoff spot. Any way to make my team successful is memorable.
Q: Over the past three seasons, what has been your favorite field to play on and why?
A: My favorite field to this day would be USF. I think the facilities are awesome and the stadium is beautiful. Oh, and don’t forget the weather! I can say Alabama was a once-in-a-lifetime place to be playing against one of the top five teams in the country. A lot of the SEC places we’ve gone to were really cool because there facilities were so big and they always had a lot of fans.
Q: What game are you most looking forward to this season?
A: There are three games I’m definitely looking forward: Tennessee, Oregon and a rematch with DePaul that will end in our favor this time!
Q: What is your personal goal for the season?
A: My personal goal is to just be the best that I can be, give it all I got and leave St. John’s knowing I gave my team all that I could. I just want to contribute and be a part of the success I know this team is going to have.
Q: Off the field, what has been your most memorable moment at St. John’s?
A: Meeting everyone that I have, whether they were athletes or non-athletes, I made a lot of friends that I can keep for the rest of my life. The other thing would just be living in the big city and seeing all the beautiful things it has to offer.
Q: What piece of advice would you give to an incoming freshman looking to play softball at St. John’s?
A: Stay mentally tough and have fun. Entering college, not just St. John’s, is a hard transition and there are a lot of highs and lows, but if you just stay the course and enjoy the journey, you will have an amazing four years.
Q: What are your plans come graduation in May?
A: I hope to get a graduate assistant position here at St. John’s and get a Masters degree in either business or sports management. If not, I’m hoping to intern or get a job somewhere in the city working for either a marketing/PR firm or big sports/TV company.
Q: If you didn’t play collegiate softball, what do you think you would be doing instead?
A: To be honest, I would probably just be working and going to school close to home. It’s a funny question to answer because every time I try to answer this question I can never come to a conclusion. I mean, I could say I hope to be playing basketball or become a dancer, but who knows what I would really be doing.
Q: What is one piece of advice you want to share with your team before heading into your final season with the Red Storm?
A: No matter what adversity we face, I’m very proud of my team. I think a lot of people doubt our abilities and I think we do a great job showing them what we are capable of. I want to thank them for always being by my side and to never give up. Let’s do what we know we can accomplish!
Throughout the course of the season, Red Storm Sports will join the team’s other three graduating seniors as they make their final journey to Rosemont. The Red Storm opens the 2015 on Feb. 6 against Youngstown State and Presbyterian in the Campbell/Hampton Inn Invitational in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
