QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a weekend that saw her cement her legacy as the most prolific scorer in St. John's Women's Soccer history, Rachel Daly has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced this morning by the league office. In addition, Jesse Schaefer earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her role in the team's defensive dominance.
Daly scored twice in the Red Storm's 3-0 win over Marquette on Sunday, taking the top spot on the St. John's career lists in both goals (42) and points (94). The game marked the Harrogate, England, native's fourth multi-goal game in her last five outings and bumped her season total to 11, currently tied for the fifth-best single-season output in program history. Daly also holds the top spot on that list, scoring 23 times during her sophomore campaign.
Despite not getting on the score sheet, Daly also played a critical role in the Red Storm's 1-0 defeat of Butler on Thursday. After an opposing forward gave St. John's problems in the defensive third, Daly shifted to left back and helped neutralize the Bulldog threat.
Schaefer, a BIG EAST All-Rookie selection as a freshman last year, finds a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this season. In her team's two games this week, Schaefer was a rock, anchoring a Red Storm back four that allowed no offensive output from its opponents in a pair of shutouts. On Thursday night against Butler, the Red Storm allowed just one shot to reach the goalkeeper. Against Marquette, St. John's again allowed just one shot on goal, this time holding the Golden Eagles to only two total shots.
On the year, St. John's has registered nine shutouts, just one off the program's single-season record. In addition, the Red Storm is allowing just 2.75 opposing shots on goal per game and ranks in the top 10 nationally in goals against average (0.33) and shutout percentage (0.82).
The Red Storm returns to action on Thursday, heading to Georgetown for a critical BIG EAST road match. The game is set to kick off at 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
