QUEENS, N.Y. -- The St. John's men's golf team inked a pair of local golfers during the early signing period as Gerry Mackedon and Jim Smoot signed National Letters of Intent (NLIs) to play for the Red Storm starting in the 2016-2017 season.
"I am thrilled to have two of the top junior players from Long Island attending St. John's University next fall," head coach Mal Galletta said.
Mackedon comes to Queens from Port Jefferson, N.Y., and competes in the renowned American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) circuit, where he currently shoots an average of 77.33 per round. He placed first in both U.S Challenge cups in which he has participated, including the Long Island and Northeast Junior Classics. The incoming freshman also took second place in the 2015 MET PGA Future series at Bethpage Red, and finished third in the 2015 MET PGA Future Series at Eisenhower White. At the MET PGA Junior Event on August 13, Mackedon carded a 64 to post another first place showing.
Smoot hails from Huntington, N.Y. and competes in the AJGA where he averages a score of 78.335 per round. He shot a 68 and 67 in two separate PGA MET Junior events, registered first in both events that took place July 10th and August 21st, respectively. Smoot also competed in the 2015 MET PGA- Tour Championship and finished in 9th place.
"Both are terrific men who will add a lot to our program and our University as they come from great families that are highly regarded in the local golf circuit," Galletta added. "Bill Mackedon is the Director of Golf and Head Professional at Port Jefferson Country Club and James Smoot has served as the head golf professional at Huntington Country Club since 1994."
