QUEENS, N.Y. - After leading her team to a 73-54 victory in its non-conference finale against Fairfield, Aliyyah Handford has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced this morning by the league office.
The 5-9 senior guard from Newark, N.J., had a spectacular outing against the Stags on Tuesday afternoon, scoring a game-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and a pair of blocks in 31 minutes of action.
Handford, who was the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Dec. 7 and the conference's preseason player of the year, ranks second in the league in scoring at 18.5 points per game. Handford was also a selection to the Early Season Watch List for the Naismith Trophy.
For her career, Handford has poured in 1,718 points and is just nine points away from tying Shenneika Smith for fourth place on the St. John's all-time scoring list.
Handford and the Red Storm open BIG EAST play on Tuesday evening, traveling to Omaha, Neb., for a 7 p.m. ET showdown with Creighton. The game will be televised nationally on FS2.
