QUEENS, N.Y. - Just one day after being named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for the first time this season, Aliyyah Handford has been named the MBWA All-Met Player of the Week.
This is the second time that Handford has taken home the honor, as she was named the Metropolitan Area's top women's college player on Dec. 23 of last year.
The senior guard from Newark, N.J., averaged 28.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per contest in a 2-0 week for the Red Storm. She also shot at a 54.2 percent clip from the floor.
On Thursday against Sacred Heart, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year scored a then-season-high 24 points, grabbed five boards and dished out four assists in a come-from-behind win at home against Sacred Heart. With her team down four near the end of the third quarter, Handford scored six in a row to spark a game-ending 23-6 run for the Red Storm.
Three days later on the road at Kansas, Handford registered the best performance of her illustrious career. The senior tallied a career-high 33 points, five rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block, as the Red Storm registered its best offensive output of the season and defeated the Jayhawks, 86-71.
Handford and the Red Storm return to action on Wednesday night, playing host to Yale in the second game of a doubleheader with the St. John's men's basketball team.
