QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second-straight season, Aliyyah Handford has been named WBCA All-Region, placing her on the final ballot for the WBCA All-America squad.
Handford garners this recognition following a standout campaign for the Red Storm that has her team in the postseason for the eighth-consecutive season. The Newark, N.J., native leads the BIG EAST in scoring, pouring in 19.6 points per game on 47 percent shooting from the floor.
This year, Handford has amassed 647 points, good enough for second place on the school's single-season record list and the program record for a junior. Currently, the Malcolm X. Shabazz High School product has 1,506 career points, ranking seventh on the St. John's career list. She is also just 30 points away from cracking the top five.
The junior guard also pulls down 6.4 boards per game, good enough for 11th in the conference, and has tallied four double-doubles on the year, tied for tops on the team.
Handford has cracked the 20-point mark on 19 occasions this season, registering a season-high 27 points on four separate occasions. In 33 games, Handford has failed to reach double digits only four times.
Last season, Handford was named WBCA Honorable Mention All-American, leading the Red Storm to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with a team-best 16.7 points per game.
Making an appearance in the WNIT Round of 16 for the third time in program history, the Red Storm returns to action on Thursday night, taking on Villanova at the Pavilion. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
