QUEENS, N.Y.- Backed by an illustrious career at St. John's, senior Erin Burner has been named a candidate for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate softball, ranking her among the Top-30 student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.
"I couldn't be more thrilled. Erin has become such a great ambassador and role model for our program," said head coach Amy Kvilhaug. "Aside from the phenomenal numbers, clutch hits and plays that she has put forth for the team over the course of her 3.5 years at St. John's, Erin has been a hard working, loyal member of the program. She is like a sponge with such a curious mind. She is always looking for more - more reps, more information and more ways she can help out in any way."
A First Team NFCA All-Great Lakes Region and unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team Catcher last season, Burner has been a catalyst for the St. John's softball team over the last four years. Heading into this weekend's tournament, Burner holds a career batting average of .338 including 35 doubles and 30 home runs. With six doubles already this season, Burner leads the BIG EAST and is only 10 away from matching the program's career mark of 45, held by Chelsea Durning (2008-11).
With the National Fastpitch Coaches Associations (NFCA) First Team All-Region award last season, Burner became only the fourth person in program history to garner such an honor and is the only member of the BIG EAST among the candidate pool for this year's Senior CLASS Award.
Holding a 3.35 cumulative GPA as a marketing major, Burner has been earned three-consecutive BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors and last year was named a NFCA Scholar-Athlete.
"As a team captain, she leads by example. Most times speaking softly while carrying a big stick, however you can guarantee that when she does speak, she captivates the team's attention," added Kvilhaug. "Erin has also been a prominent figure in the community during her time with the program. She thoroughly enjoys helping people."
Away from the field, Burner has been involved with service projects at St. Nick's Men's Shelter, the Atria Senior Living Home and the Ronald McDonald House, giving pack to the community whenever she can.
"I've always made sure I had time for community service with our busy schedule," said Burner. "As a team, we make sure it is important to participate in community service, so we set time aside and make sure it becomes a priority."
About The Award
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2015 Women's College World Series.
