Heide Wins BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's reliever Shawn Heide has been chosen as one of two winners of the 2014-15 BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award, as selected by the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee.
The award, a $5,000 scholarship for postgraduate work, is given to one male and one female student-athlete from a BIG EAST-sponsored sport that has been admitted to a degree-granting or professional program for the following year and has demonstrated leadership through excellence in academic credentials, athletic performance and depth of commitment to service within the institution and community.
Also the winner of the 2014-15 BIG EAST Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete Award, Heide will continue his academic career at St. John's University and pursue a Juris Doctorate/Master of Business Administration dual graduate program in Fall 2015.
A member of the prestigious St. John's University President's Society, the highest honor society at the University, Heide has a 3.91 GPA as a marketing major and has posted at least a 3.70 GPA in seven-consecutive semesters. Heide serves as the baseball representative for both the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and Student Development 101, and is a member of both the Sigma Iota Epsilon honor society and the Marketing Club.
Heide has also been involved in numerous community service initiatives, including volunteer work with The Miracle League of Long Island, St. John's the Baptist Parish, St. John's University Campus Ministry, St. Nicholas of Tolentine Men's Shelter and Relay For Life.
The reliever has made 35 appearances in his Red Storm career and has posted a 5-1 record to go with 32 strikeouts in 38.1 innings of work. In his first season of collegiate competition in 2014, Heide went 3-0 in 18 appearances and had 20 strikeouts in 21.2 innings of work.
