QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's baseball program will officially unveil the Bob Sheppard Press Box in a dedication ceremony prior to the Red Storm's 2 p.m. game on Saturday, May 9, at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Bob Sheppard Press Box is the culmination of the Bob Sheppard Initiative, the latest in a series of efforts to improve Kaiser Stadium.
The Bob Sheppard Initiative was created to fund the renovation of the existing press box at Kaiser Stadium. Highlighted by an awning with the words "Bob Sheppard Press Box," the improvements to the press box also included the installation of carpet, new ceiling tiles and new doors as well as painting of the interior walls.
Known throughout the sports world as the "Voice of God," Sheppard served as the public address announcer at Yankee Stadium from 1951-2009 and was also the voice of the New York Giants for nearly 50 years.
Sheppard's roots, however, are at St. John's as an alumnus, student-athlete, professor and "Voice of the Redmen." The 1932 alumnus was a seven-time varsity letterwinner in the sports of football and baseball. Sheppard also served as a speech professor at the University for parts of six decades and acted as the longtime public address announcer at then-Alumni Hall.
A moment of silence will be held following the Bob Sheppard Press Box dedication to honor the lives of both Sheppard and former Department of Athletics administrative assistant Connie Maffei Kaiser, who was the wife of current St. John's Athletic Director Emeritus, and former baseball coach and Athletic Director Jack Kaiser.
A reception will be held on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the University Center, Suite D. To RSVP, contact Paul Sclafani at sclafanp@stjohns.edu or 718-990-5539.
