Red Storm suffer first series opening loss in conference play this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team dropped its first series opening game of conference play the season to Butler, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Red Storm (28-24, 13-6 BIG EAST) had won six straight series opening games and prior to Friday's setback, the last time the team fell in a series opener was on March 27 to California Baptist. Butler (20-32, 11-8 BIG EAST) scored three runs in the top of the third and held on to take the first game of the weekend.
A trio of Johnnies collected a pair of hits. Jayder Raifstanger, Dylan Fitzsimmons and Cristian Bernardini led the offensive charge. Fitzsimmons, Jon LeGrande and Rob Mansour each picked RBIs.
Starter Liam O'Leary was handed his first loss of the season in conference play, allowing five runs across 5.0 innings of work. Victor Frederick and Kyle Chase combined to pitch 4.0 innings of two-run ball allowing six hits.
St. John's struck first in the bottom of the second frame. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Mansour singled through the left side. After Lewis Rodriguez was plunked, LeGrande lifted a sacrifice fly to score Bernardini, 2-0.
Butler responded immediately in the top of the third, plating a trio of runs to take the lead at 3-2.
The Bulldogs scored a tally in both the fourth and fifth innings to grow their advantage to 5-3.
Red Storm was able to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning. Following back-to-back singles, Butler induced a ground out as the runners advanced to second and third. Fitzsimmons followed with a ground out to score Raifstanger to make it 5-3.
The Bulldogs added a pair of tallies in the top of the ninth, adding to their cushion to bring the score to its 7-3 final.
St. John's and Butler will battle again tomorrow afternoon in the second game of the series. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
