QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella will be trading the hardwood for the softball diamond on Sunday, August 2, participating in "The Frank Catalanotto Foundation vs. Boomer and Carton All-Stars Celebrity Softball Game," presented by First Nationwide Title Agency.
The game, to be held at Bethpage Ballpark, will benefit The Vascular Birthmarks Foundation, raising money and awareness to help fight the affliction in both children and adults.
"I'm incredibly excited and honored to be taking part in such a great event," said Tartamella. "I've known Frankie and his family since I was a kid, watching his career as one of the best athletes in the history of our hometown. As great as Frankie's career was in the majors, he's even a better person, which makes my participation in this event all the more special."
Catalanotto who, like Tartamella, hails from Smithtown, N.Y., enjoyed a 14-year Major League Baseball career. He started his eponymously named foundation over a decade ago after his daughter, Morgan, was born with a vascular birthmark. After receiving an initial misdiagnosis, Catalanotto and his wife, Barbara, established their foundation to raise awareness about vascular birthmarks, a condition that can spread rapidly if not caught early and treated properly.
Tartamella and Team Catalanotto will be facing off against the Boomer and Carton All-Stars, a team that will include former NFL quarterback and media personality Boomer Esiason, former New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro, and Long Island basketball legend and former NBA standout Wally Szczerbiak.
Tickets to the event are on sale now and can be purchased for as little as $10 through The Long Island Ducks.
