QUEENS, N.Y. - Less than 24 hours after earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, Danaejah Grant has been named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week, it was announced today by the MBWA.
Grant's honor marks the second time this season that a St. John's player has taken home the award, as Aliyyah Handford garnered the accolade on Dec. 8.
During a week in which the Red Storm went 2-0 with a victory over No. 25/20 Seton Hall, the senior guard averaged 28.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. The BIG EAST's leading scorer this season at 19.8 points per game, Grant converted on 62.5 percent of her tries from both the floor and from downtown.
In her most recent outing, Grant led the Red Storm to its second victory this season against a ranked opponent, as her team downed No. 25/20 Seton Hall, 71-69, on Saturday at Carnesecca Arena. The Piscataway, N.J., native tallied her third double-double of the season, setting season-highs with 29 points and 13 rebounds against the rival Pirates.
The Red Storm has now won multiple games against ranked opponents in the same season for the first time since 2011-12, when the Red Storm beat six teams in the top 25 en route to the program's first-ever in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Against Marquette on Tuesday night, Grant registered 27 points, four rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks, as the Red Storm outlasted Marquette, 81-77, in overtime.
Grant and the Red Storm return to action this weekend, hitting the road for matchups with Georgetown on Friday and Villanova on Sunday.
