QUEENS, N.Y. - After splitting a pair of contests on the road last weekend, the Red Storm returns to the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena on Friday night, playing host to Butler at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on BIG EAST Digital Network, with Ralph Bednarczyk and Megan Hughes Perry on the call.
QUICK HITS
On Sunday afternoon against Villanova, the Red Storm shot 49 percent or better from the field for the eighth time this season before ultimately falling to the Wildcats by a score of 58-54. The Red Storm dropped its fourth game of the year thanks in large part to Villanova's efforts on the boards, as the Wildcats turned 16 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points. For the game, Villanova outrebounded St. John's, 33-23.
Often praised by the coaching staff as the "motor that makes the team go," Aaliyah Lewis has been playing exceptionally in BIG EAST play. The 5-5 guard from Staten Island, N.Y., is averaging 10.1 points per game against conference opponents, the third best output on the team. She also leads the squad with 3.7 helpers per game and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.9 to 1 in league action.
The BIG EAST's leading scorer at 19.6 points per game this season, Danaejah Grant earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second-straight week on Monday. The senior guard averaged 18.5 points per game against Georgetown and Villanova, including her eighth 20-plus point performance of the season against the Wildcats. The senior from Piscataway, N.J., shot 56 percent from the field in those two games.
The Red Storm has made the most of its opportunities on campus this season, sporting a record of 7-1 in games played at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm is 2-1 this season against ranked opponents inside the building named after the winningest coach in the history of St. John's basketball and 5-0 against unranked opponents. The Johnnies are 42-13 in home games under Joe Tartamella.
SCOUTING BUTLER
Sporting a record of 7-11 overall and a 2-5 mark in BIG EAST play, Butler comes to Carnesecca Arena having lost its last three games. Last weekend, the Bulldogs dropped a pair of home games to DePaul and Marquette.
Butler has two players averaging double figures on the season, led by senior guard Blaire Langlois at 13.2 points per game. Freshman forward Tori Schickel is averaging 13.1 points per game, but the rookie from Evansville, Ind., did not see action in either of the Bulldogs contests last weekend.
The Bulldogs have struggled to score this season, averaging just 60.9 points per game, the second-lowest total in the BIG EAST.
ST. JOHN'S vs. BUTLER- THE SERIES
The Bulldogs are currently in their third year as a member of the BIG EAST conference.
Butler and St. John's have met four times since the 2013-14 season, with the Red Storm claiming victory in three of those contests.
Last season, the Bulldogs picked up a 55-50 win at Carnesecca Arena on Jan. 9 before the Red Storm took home a 60-49 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Feb. 27.
