QUEENS, N.Y. -- Former St. John's men's golfer and current PGA TOUR star Keegan Bradley hosted his 5th annual Charity Golf Classic in his hometown of Woodstock, Vt. this past August.
"Everywhere I go - with or without the team - people ask about Keegan. Other coaches, players, alums; all want to know about him," said St. John's Head Coach Mal Galletta. "He's such a nationally recognized name, and he represents the university so well. It's great to see a former member of the St. John's golf team doing such great things, from his talent and success on the course to the time he spends off the course giving to such charitable causes."
Introduced in 2012, Bradley's event benefits the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation in its support of the Vermont Cancer Center and Vermont Children's Hospital to fund life saving research for children battling cancer.
"Keegan, along with fellow pros Jon Curran and Brendan Steele, host what has really become a family event each year in Woodstock," said 1987 CBA-SJU Board of Trustees member, Jim Shannon. "Keegan and his fiancé Jillian's passion to represent their home state and raise money for pediatric cancer research and support, shines throughout the day. Each year that I've attended, I've been honored to represent the SJU community and see our most successful golf alum exhibit his Vincentian values."
Bradley is no stranger to giving back to the community. In July, Bradley and his family were honored by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association (MGWA) as the Family of the Year at the 65th National Awards Dinner for their service and representation of the virtues and ideals of golf and family.
"Even though Keegan has enjoyed tremendous professional success, he has never forgotten what he learned here at St. John's," said Kevin Reed, a 1975 graduate and Board of Governors member. "His passion and ability to raise meaningful funds to conquer pediatric cancer is something that we all should greatly admire and loudly applaud. As an alumnus, I greatly respect all the time, energy and effort he and his family have dedicated toward an extremely worthwhile cause. Keegan makes us all proud and his actions sharply defines what the St. John's experience is all about. I always look forward to traveling to Vermont in August to support a fellow St. John's grad and plan to do so for many, many years to come."
One of the most decorated athletes in St. John's history, Bradley won nine individual medals during his time with the Red Storm from 2005-08. After winning the PGA Championship, and becoming just the third player to secure a major in his first attempt, Bradley was voted as the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2011.
"St John's University is very proud of Keegan Bradley's charity work for Children's Pediatric Cancer and the Woodstock community," said Billy Schaeffer, a 1973 CBA recipient. "As alumnus of St John's University, Keegan demonstrates the mission of the SJU community with his commitment to service. Representing the university at this event for the past five years has been a privilege in showing support to Keegan and making the event a success."
