QUEENS, N.Y. - Playing in its second match in as many days, the St. John's volleyball team was knocked off by Creighton, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-18) at Carnesecca Arena on Saturday evening.
Julia Cast, a junior from Westbury, N.Y., paced the Red Storm (13-13, 4-9 BIG EAST) offense with a team-high 10 kills on a .269 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Erica Di Maulo distributed 24 assists and picked up a match-high three aces, while also adding seven digs.
Margherita Bianchin posted seven kills and now has over 500 kills in her St. John's career and Gaia Traballi was second on the squad with eight kills against the Bluejays.
Creighton (18-6, 12-0 BIG EAST) continued to remain perfect in conference play, as it hit at a .346 clip and held the Johnnies to a .097 hitting percentage. The Bluejays were led by Lydia Dimke's 40 assists and Marysa Wilkinson's 11 kills at a .500 clip.
The first-set was even to start with the score tied at eight, but the Bluejays finished the set on a 17-6 run to win the frame, 25-14. Traballi and Bianchin each produced three kills in the set and Di Maulo contributed seven assists.
The next set was the closest of the match, as Cast registered five kills on a .625 clip, but the two-time defending BIG EAST Champions held off the Red Storm to win the stanza, 25-20. The Johnnies were trailing 20-14, but went on a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to three. The Bluejays then won the next two points on back-to-back kills to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Creighton began the third-set with a 10-4 advantage, but the Red Storm won six of the next nine points to trim the lead to 13-10 Bluejays. St. John's battled but Creighton stopped the Red Storm momentum and won the set, 25-18.
The Red Storm will conclude its regular season home slate with two matches next weekend, with a showdown against Villanova on Friday at 7 p.m. and the next day a matchup against Georgetown at 5 p.m. This match will be Senior Day for the Johnnies, as Melissa Chin, Hope Demel, Mona Karkkainen and Nikki Sen will be honored prior to the start of Saturday's match.
