QUEENS, N.Y. - With the 2016-17 season in full swing, St. John's Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella has signed Kayla Charles to a National Letter of Intent to join the Red Storm next Fall.
Charles, currently a senior at William Cullen Bryant High School, has been one of the best rebounders in the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) over the last three seasons.
"Kayla has incredible length and athleticism and reminds me so much of Amber Thompson when she was in high school," said Tartamella. "She will provide us with versatility all over the floor on both ends and has an incredible ability to rebound the ball. We look forward to adding her to our program next year."
Charles, who averaged 17.1 rebounds, 12.4 points and 4.5 assists per game as a junior, is a long, athletic forward who can play above the rim. At 6-3, she is a shot blocker who can run the floor and provide a viable option down low.
Charles burst onto the PSAL scene as a freshman, averaging 14.8 rebounds per game, good enough for 17th in the league. She followed that up with a 14.5 rebound-per-game season as a sophomore in 2014-15, finishing 15th overall.
Tartamella and the Red Storm continue the 2016-17 season this weekend when they take part in the 2016 South Point Thanksgiving Shoot Out in Las Vegas. The Johnnies will take on Virginia on Friday and Arizona State on Saturday before heading back home to start a three-game homestand.
