Dec. 27, 2016 QUEENS, N.Y. - The recognitions continue to roll in for St. John's guard Shamorie Ponds, as the rookie from Brooklyn has been named the National Freshman of the Week by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and CBS Sports, it was announced this afternoon.
In addition to garnering this prestigious accolade, Ponds has also cracked CBS Sports' Frosh Watch, a weekly top 10 ranking of players in the running for the Wayman Tisdale Award, presented annually by the USBWA to the nation's top freshman. Per CBS Sports, "the list is arranged by production and statistics but with a broader lens of looking at the level of competition each player has faced."
The Preseason BIG EAST Freshman of the Year put forth a spectacular showing in the Red Storm's victory over Syracuse on Wednesday night, the worst loss suffered by the Orange in the history of the Carrier Dome. Ponds exploded for a game-high 21 points in the Johnnies' 93-60 triumph, in addition to dishing out seven assists, grabbing six rebounds and swiping four steals. On top of those stats, Ponds also blocked a shot and surrendered no turnovers in 34 minutes of action.
On the season, Ponds' 17.2 points per game rank sixth among all Division I freshmen and ninth in the BIG EAST, while his 41 made 3-pointers lead all BIG EAST players and his 3.2 made triples per game rank second among NCAA freshmen, trailing only Kentucky's Malik Monk.
Several other outstanding collegiate rookies have taken home the USBWA/CBS Sports National Freshman of the Week Award so far this season, including Monk and Duke standout Jayson Tatum.
Ponds and the Red Storm return to action on Thursday night, playing host to No. 13/13 Butler at 7 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena.
