GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The St. John's men's golf team shot a sits in 14th place after shooting a 289 (+1) in Sunday's opening round at the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz.
Troy Evans has overall leader, Zack Zaback of Connecticut, in his sights. The freshman is four strokes shy of Zaback after shooting a 69 (-3) in his first go-around on the Palms Course at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
Freshmen Seung Yub Baek and Michael Conforti carded identical 73 (+1) opening rounds to help St. John's stay in contention for a top-10 finish.
The Red Storm is ahead of Drake, Loyola-Maryland and Manhattan, and only two strokes behind Utah Valley for 10th place in the team standings.
Indiana represents the top-spot in the overall team leaderboard with a 271 (-17) finish. William & Mary and Connecticut occupy the second and third slots after carding a 275 (-13) and 277 (-11), respectively.
Junior Giuseppe Truglio tees off at 10:40 a.m. (ET) tomorrow morning to open up the second round for St. John's.
