Handford Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second-consecutive week and the fourth time overall this season, a member of the St. John's Red Storm has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, as Aliyyah Handford has taken home the conference's highest weekly honor, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.
This recognition marks Handford's second BIG EAST Player of the Week award this season, as she took home the honor on Dec. 7.
The 5-9 senior guard had an historic weekend for the Red Storm, becoming the school's all-time leading scorer on Friday against Providence, passing Ling Ling Hou (1,950). The Newark, N.J., native now sits with 1,992 points for her career, just eight points away from becoming the first player in St. John's Women's Basketball history to reach the mark.
For the week, Handford averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game, converting on 52.6 percent of her tries from the floor in the process.
On Friday against Providence, Handford registered her second-best offensive output of the season, tallying 27 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Two days later against Creighton, Handford scored a game-high 19 points while adding seven rebounds and four steals.
Handford and the Red Storm will be the four seed in this weekend's BIG EAST Tournament, opening up their postseason on Sunday, March 6 at 9:30 p.m. ET against Georgetown. That game will be broadcast live on FS2.
