QUEENS, N.Y. -- Sophomore Krystal Puga and junior Grace Kramer were both rewarded for their work this past week as Puga earned BIG EAST Player of the Week and Kramer landed a spot on the Honor Roll, which was announced by the conference offices this afternoon.
Puga's monster week was highlighted by a career-performance against Western Illinois as she went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI in a 6-1 win over the Leathernecks. The Los Angeles, Calif., native was the difference maker against Georgia Tech as she notched a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth to give St. John's the win over the Yellow Jackets.
For the week, Puga finished with 10 hits in 20 at-bats (.500) and tallied two home runs, 10 RBI and four runs scored. The first baseman also notched three multi-hit games en route to her second-career Player of the Week honor.
Kramer dominated Western Illinois to improve her record to 2-0 in the circle this season. The right-hander from San Diego, Calif., struck out seven and allowed only two hits in a complete game effort for St. John's fifth win of the year.
In five appearances, Kramer fanned 13 batters and recorded a 1.38 ERA in 13.0 innings. She did not allow a run in three stints out of the bullpen. It marks the second time Kramer has been recognized by the conference.
Together, the duo helped St. John's go 3-3 in six games with wins over Georgia Tech, Indiana State and Western Illinois.
The Red Storm (5-6) returns to the diamond this weekend when St. John's travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Tennessee Invitational on March 4-6.
