QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second time in as many days, Aliyyah Handford has garnered a prestigious weekly honor, taking home the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association's Player of the Week Award, it was announced this morning.
Yesterday, Handford was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for the second time this season after averaging 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per contest in a pair of games for the Red Storm. Tuesday also marks the second time this year that Handford has taken home the MBWA's designation as the top player in the New York City area.
Even more impressive than her statistical performance, Handford became the all-time leading scorer in program history on Friday and inched ever closer to becoming the first women's basketball player at St. John's to reach the 2,000-point plateau. She passed Ling Ling Hou for the top spot on the all-time scoring list with her 1,951st point as a member of the Red Storm and currently sits with 1,992 points for her St. John's tenure.
On Friday against Providence, Handford put forth her second-highest offensive output of the year, tallying 27 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals against the Friars.
Two days later against Creighton, the senior guard netted a game-high 19 points in addition to seven rebounds and four steals.
Handford and the fourth-seeded Red Storm kick off BIG EAST Tournament action on Sunday, taking on the fifth-seeded Georgetown Hoyas at 9:30 p.m. ET at McGrath-Phillips Arena in Chicago.
