WBCA Release with Full All-Region List
QUEENS, N.Y. - After putting together one of the most impressive seasons in the history of the St. John's Women's Basketball program, Danaejah Grant has been named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-Region Team, it was announced this morning by the organization.
One of just 52 players nationwide to receive the accolade, Grant is now on the final ballot for the WBCA All-America Team. The Piscataway, N.J., native is one of just two BIG EAST players to earn this recognition, joining BIG EAST Player of the Year Chanise Jenkins from DePaul.
This season, Grant put an exclamation point on one of the most impressive tenures in the storied history of St. John's Women's Basketball. The senior guard led the BIG EAST in scoring with 19.6 points per game and registered 646 points on the campaign, good enough for the second-highest single-season point total in school history. Grant scored 20 or more points in 17 of 33 games as a senior, including a school-record seven-straight from Jan. 31 to Feb. 26.
Despite playing just 92 games in red and white since her St. John's debut in the 2013-14 season, Grant still managed to crack the top 10 on the Johnnies' all-time scoring list, wrapping up her Red Storm career with 1,498 points for Head Coach Joe Tartamella.
An All-BIG EAST First Team honoree as a senior, Grant was twice named the conference's Player of the Week this season and found a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll six times. She also garnered Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week accolades twice in 2015-16.
In addition to leading the conference in scoring, Grant also ranked fourth in field goal percentage (49.9%) and 10th in rebounding (6.3 rpg).
Most notably, Grant was an unquestioned team leader on a Red Storm squad that captured the program's first BIG EAST Championship since 1988. A member of the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, Grant averaged 16.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game over three contests in Chicago, including a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double in the Red Storm's semifinal victory over top-seeded DePaul on the Blue Demons' home court.
In the Red Storm's NCAA Tournament First Round matchup against Auburn, Grant scored a game-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds in a losing effort for the Johnnies.
