QUEENS, N.Y. - After an impressive start to her professional career with the Houston Dash of the National Women's Soccer League, Rachel Daly has been called home. The Red Storm's all-time leading scorer has been tabbed for the English National Team in the next round of UEFA Euro 2017 qualifying, as she is scheduled to take part in England's upcoming doubleheader with Serbia.
"Rachel has been playing very well in the NWSL with Houston Dash and really fits the profile of a Lioness so I am delighted to welcome her into the group," said England Head Coach Mark Sampson. "Our focus is to be a together group and work hard to improve in every area. Each opportunity that we get to spend time together only helps us to grow and develop as a team."
The first leg of the twinbill will take place about an hour outside of London at Wycombe Wanderers' Adams Park on Sat., June 4, at 5:30 BST (12:30 EDT). Three days later, the Lionesses will travel to Serbia for the return game, with first kick scheduled for 4 p.m. BST (11 a.m. EDT) in Stara Pazova. England's home match will be televised live on BBC Two.
Daly has been spectacular so far for the Dash in her rookie NWSL campaign. The sixth pick in January's NWSL College Draft, Daly leads the team in points with a goal and three assists on the season. The Harrogate, England, native also ranks third in the league in assists, fourth in shots on goal (7) and fifth in shots overall (16).
In her three years at St. John's, Daly put together the most impressive career in Red Storm history, graduating this past January as the program's most prolific offensive player. Behind a school-record 50 goals and 111 points, Daly helped lead the Red Storm to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and the program's first-ever BIG EAST Regular Season title in 2015. A semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy as a senior, Daly was a two-time All-American and took home BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors on two occasions.
The Red Storm will kick off its 2016 campaign on Friday, Aug. 19, hosting CCSU at 5 p.m. on Belson Stadium.
