QUEENS, N.Y. - With a winning percentage of nearly .700 through eight games in 2016, the St. John's Red Storm has garnered its first national recognition of the season, garnering five votes in the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
The Red Storm caught the eyes of many on the national stage following a stellar effort against Washington on Friday night, playing the nationally acclaimed Huskies to a 0-0 draw in the opening game of the Nike Portland Invitational.
Last season, the Red Storm rose as high as No. 22 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll and No. 15 in the Soccer America rankings en route to the school's first-ever BIG EAST Regular Season Championship. The highest rankings in program history came during the Red Storm's first NCAA Tournament season in 2009, when the Johnnies vaulted to No. 17 in the NSCAA Poll and No. 11 in Soccer America.
The Red Storm's success this season has been anchored by the team's stellar defensive play, as the Johnnies rank 20th in the NCAA with a goals against average of 0.46. Two-time reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Diana Poulin carries a GAA of just 0.35, good enough for 16th in the nation, while her five shutouts are just one off the national lead in that category.
The Red Storm returns to the pitch on Sunday afternoon, closing out non-conference play with a 1 p.m. match against La Salle.
