QUEENS, N.Y. - Coinciding with the release of the conference schedule by the BIG EAST office, the complete St. John's women's basketball slate was revealed on Tuesday afternoon, as the Red Storm is set to compete in 29 regular-season games against some of the top competition in the country.
St. John's will have four of its conference games broadcast live on national television, as two of the Johnnies matches will be carried on FS1, while one contest will appear on both CBS Sports Network and FS2.
The Red Storm will begin BIG EAST competition on Fri., Dec. 30, at 7 p.m., traveling to South Orange for a matchup against the Pirates that will be aired nationally on FS2. The Red Storm and Pirates have developed a budding rivalry over the past few seasons, with the programs fighting for bragging rights in the Tri-State Area. Last season, the Red Storm swept Seton Hall by defeating the No. 25/20 Pirates at home on Jan. 9 before traveling to the Garden State and claiming a victory at Walsh Gym on Feb. 7. In four of the last five meetings between the Red Storm and Pirates, at least one of the squads has been ranked inside the Top 25.
The Red Storm will hit the road to kick off 2017, taking on Xavier on Jan. 2 in Cincinnati before traveling to Indianapolis to face Butler on Jan. 5. Both of those contests are slated for 7 p.m. tip-offs and the Xavier game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network. Last season, the Red Storm took both of its games against the Musketeers, defeating Xavier, 57-41, in Queens on Jan. 22 before outlasting the Musketeers, 69-56, in Cincinnati a month later. The Johnnies split their series with Butler in 2015-16, soundly defeating the Bulldogs at home before suffering a defeat on the road at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Johnnies return to Carnesecca Arena for their BIG EAST home opener on Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. against Marquette. Last year, the Red Storm and the Golden Eagles split a pair of matchups, with each team claiming victory on its home court.
Two days later on Jan. 10 at 7 p.m., St. John's will play host to defending BIG EAST Regular Season Champion DePaul. After setting a post-realignment BIG EAST record with 16 regular season wins a year ago, the top-seeded Blue Demons fell to St. John's in the semifinals of the conference tournament on their home floor, as the Johnnies overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half en route to their first BIG EAST title since 1988.
St. John's will hit the road after taking on DePaul, heading to our nation's capital for a nationally-televised showdown with Georgetown on Fri., Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. The game, which will be shown on FS1, is a rematch of last year's BIG EAST Quarterfinal, a contest that the Red Storm won, 65-52, en route to the conference title. Two days later, the Red Storm will travel to The City of Brotherly Love, squaring off against Villanova at The Pavilion.
The Red Storm will return to the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena on Fri., Jan. 20, playing host to Creighton in a rematch of last year's BIG EAST Championship Game. The Johnnies' claimed victory of two of their three matches last season against the Bluejays, who return much of their talent from last year's squad. On Sunday, Jan. 22, the Red Storm will close out the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest at home against Providence. St. John's defeated Providence soundly in both of their matchups last season.
The second half of the BIG EAST season kicks off on Friday, Jan. 27, as St. John's welcomes Butler to Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. tilt.
Two days later, the Red Storm will welcome Xavier to The Big Apple for the jewel of its regular season schedule, as the Johnnies will host the Musketeers at 3 p.m. inside Madison Square Garden, "The World's Most Famous Arena." Held in conjunction with the Red Storm men's basketball squad's 6 p.m. contest against Xavier that night, the game will mark the 14th time in the history of St. John's Women's Basketball that the Red Storm will suit up under the bright lights of "The Mecca of College Basketball."
The following weekend, St. John's will head to the Midwest for a pair of games, taking on DePaul on Friday, Feb. 3, at 8 p.m. before traveling to Milwaukee for a contest with Marquette on Sunday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m.
The Red Storm then hosts Villanova and Georgetown on their return trips to Carnesecca Arena, welcoming the Wildcats to Queens on Friday, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m. before squaring off against the Hoyas on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. The Villanova game will mark St. John's final regular-season appearance on FS1.
St. John's closes out the road portion of its regular season on Feb. 17 and 19, taking on Providence on Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Omaha for a contest against Creighton.
One last game awaits the Red Storm on the regular season's final weekend, as the Johnnies will host Seton Hall on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m.
