St. John's Set for MSG BIG EAST Doubleheader

QUEENS, N.Y. - On Sunday, Jan. 29, the St. John's men's and women's basketball teams will host BIG EAST foe Xavier in a doubleheader at "The World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden.
The opener, which will pin the women against the Musketeers at 3 p.m., will mark the 14th time in the history of St. John's Women's Basketball that the Red Storm will suit up under the lights at Madison Square Garden. In the night cap, the men will take on Xavier at 6 p.m.
The Johnnies have had some memorable moments at MSG in recent years. On Dec. 22, 2013, a last-second shot by Aliyyah Handford sent the Red Storm to a 72-70 win over then-No. 24 Texas A&M. A year later, Handford became just the third player during the 2014-15 season to score 20 or more points in a game against then-No. 2 Connecticut in the Maggie Dixon Classic on Jan. 4, 2015.
Under Head Coach Joe Tartamella, the Johnnies are 2-2 at MSG, and 8-5 overall, dating back to the 2003-04 season. This meeting between the Red Storm and the Musketeers will be the first clash between the two schools at "The Mecca of College Basketball."
The St. John's men's basketball team has called The Garden home since 1930-31, nearly 40 years before MSG even occupied its current location between 7th and 8th Avenues. During that time, the Johnnies have claimed victory in 419 games contested at "The World's Most Famous Arena" and hold a .593 winning percentage all-time inside its hallowed halls.
Last season, the Red Storm enjoyed its marquee win of the season in Midtown, downing Final Four bound Syracuse, 84-72, on Dec. 13.
