QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second time in as many days, St. John's women's basketball senior Jade Walker has been honored for her outstanding play last week, taking home the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association's Player of the Week Award, the organization announced Tuesday.
Yesterday, Walker was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the fourth time this season after averaging 20.7 points per game on 60.9 percent shooting. The Maplewood, N.J., native also brought down 7.7 rebounds per contest, leading the Red Storm to a 3-0 week.
Walker began the week with a then-career-best 24-point outing at Xavier. The 6-2 forward hit 10 of her 15 attempts from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and came away with a pair of steals as St. John's defeated the Musketeers, 65-48.
Walker then closed out the week with a stellar 32-point showing at home against Marquette on Sunday, becoming the first St. John's player to score 30 or more points in a game since former Red Storm standout Aliyyah Handford put up 33 points in last year's BIG EAST Tournament semifinals against DePaul. Walker hit 15-of-22 from the floor and brought down a season-high nine rebounds in the Johnnies' 70-64 win over the Golden Eagles.
Since St. John's began BIG EAST play on Dec. 30 at Seton Hall, Walker is tied for the league-lead in scoring with 20.8 points per game in league action.
Walker and the rest of the Red Storm return to the court tonight when they take on BIG EAST-leading DePaul at Carnesecca Arena. The first tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
